Introduction to Chapter 7 – Civilising the “Native”, Educating the Nation
The British considered the Indian Education system to be primitive and unworthy. They considered it inferior to the education system of the West. Hence, they introduced the reforms that transformed the system of education in India. They called the Indians uncivilised and called it their duty to civilise them. In this chapter, we will try and understand what implication the British rule had for the lives of students. How the British saw education and orientalism are discussed in the chapter. The report of William Adam on vernacular schools and what changes were brought up in the education system by the British government was discussed in the latter half of the chapter.
