Introduction to Chapter 3 – Ruling the Countryside
After the East India Company gained a stronghold in India, it started managing the administrative affairs to its benefit. It implemented the laws that earned them more and more profits. The chapter deals with the company starting to rule India with its new acts and laws. The chapter talks about how the company became the diwan of Bengal and how it generated unmatchable profits. Later on, the problem in agriculture revenue was talked about and many new systems such as the Munro system which was brought in to eradicate problems in agriculture revenue were discussed. The importance of Indian indigo was also discussed. Finally, in the end, the chapter discusses The blue rebellion associated with indigo cultivation.
