Introduction to Chapter 5 – When People Rebel 1857 and After
The atrocities of the British and their partial policies enraged the Indians but due to the repressive policies, Indian voices were subdued for long. The ice broke when Mangal Pandey refused to obey the same and revolted against the commanding officers. This sparked a row among the regiment which finally turned into an uncontrollable nationalist fire in the form of the Revolt of 1857. The chapter talks about the reforms brought in by the British officials and the effects associated with them. It also talks about the Revolt of 1857 and how it turned out to be one of the greatest revolts in Indian history. Later the chapter talks about how the company fought back and suppressed the revolt of 1857 and the changes that were brought in by the company in the aftermath of the revolt of 1857.
