What is the politics of social divisions in class 10 of Political Science?
In a democracy, there is generally more than one party for elections. People have options at the time of voting and can choose any party according to their wishes. There is competition among the political parties to win the elections and form the government political parties try to influence and impress the voters by making promises and discussing their plans of growth for the country.
Since some or the other kind of social divisions exist in all societies, there is a probability that the political parties might use these social divisions for their own benefit. They can favour a particular social group by promising them growth in the future. This ensures them the votes from such a social group. This is very dangerous as it has the probability of creating conflicts in society. The social divisions might become political divisions and can lead to conflicts and distrust in society.
- Combination of politics and social divisions is very dangerous and explosive: The period of violence in Ireland during the 20th century has been named as 'The Troubles.' The Troubles consisted of about 30 years of repeated acts of intense violence between elements of Northern Ireland's Nationalist community (principally Roman Catholic) and Unionist community (principally Protestant). The conflict was caused by the disputed status of Northern Ireland within the United Kingdom and the domination of the minority nationalist community and alleged discrimination against them, by the unionist majority. In the 30 years, hundreds of civilians, militants and security forces were killed. It was only in 1998, that the UK government and the Nationalists reached a peace treaty after which the later suspended their armed struggle. But in Yugoslavia, the story did not have a happy end. Political competition along religious and ethnic lines led to the disintegration of Yugoslavia into six independent countries
- Every expression of social division in politics does not lead to disasters: Social divisions of one kind or another exist in most countries of the world. Wherever they exist, these divisions are reflected in politics. In a democracy, it is only natural that political parties would talk about these divisions, make different promises to different communities, look after due representation of various communities and make policies to redress the grievances of the disadvantaged communities. Social divisions affect voting in most countries. People from one community tend to prefer some parties more than others. In many countries, there are parties that focus only on one community. Yet all this does not lead to the disintegration of the country.
