Being a democracy, India cuts across the social differences and this leads to mutual harmony. The chapter throws light on the various aspects of society and the existing social differences. It discusses the sexual division of labour and the dismay situations faced by Indian women. It touches upon the evils like domestic violence, sex-selective abortions and low literacy rates among females. It focuses on the low participation of women in politics and the role of religion in the political sphere. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “ Religion can never be separated from politics” but this has a positive construct which aims at taking the good values from the religion. When this takes a negative construct, it leads to Communalism. The chapter also discusses the role of caste in politics and vice versa. It highlights the fact that politics has proved to be useful for the social groups that were once supposed to be outcasted.
