Brief introduction of Chapter 6 Anatomy of Flowering Plants
Anatomy is the study of the internal structure of an organism. Anatomy is derived from the Greek word ‘anatomy’ which means ‘dissection’. The Father of plant anatomy is N.Grew while the father of Indian plant anatomy is Prof. P.Jayaraman.
This chapter will give us insight to understand the internal structure of plants like different types of tissues, and the internal structure of plant organs.
Knowledge about different tissues and their location will help us to understand how different form of growth and functions takes place in plants. Meristematic tissues are responsible for performing various types of growth in plants.
Permanent tissues like parenchyma, collenchyma and sclerenchyma are specialised to perform different functions in plants like photosynthesis, storage etc.
Vascular tissues like xylem and phloem are specialised to perform the function of transportation in plants. Understanding these tissues helps us to understand the chapter Transportation in plants easily.
Dicot plant shows secondary growth while monocot does not show secondary growth as monocot are devoid of cambium.
Plant growing in the temperate region shows alternate dark and light ring which becomes the basis of dendrochronology.
