Brief introduction of Chapter 5 Morphology of Flowering Plants
This chapter focus on the study of the external feature of flowering plants which is their morphology. Morphology is derived from the Greek word ‘morpho’ which means shape or form and the word ‘logos which means study.
Wilhelm Hofmeister is known as the father of plant morphology while professor S.C Maheswari is known as the father of Indian Plant Morphology.
In this chapter, we will be studying the overall morphology of flowering plants like the morphology of roots, stem, leaf, flower, fruit and seed.
We will also get an overview of different types of modification in different external parts of plants according to their environmental condition and habitat.
Modification in plants can be for respiration, assimilation, support etc. different modified structure includes tuber, pneumatophore, prop roots, leaf tendrils etc.
We will also study the arrangement of the leaf (Phyllotaxy) and flower (Inflorescence) on the stem, the arrangement of calyx and corolla (Aestivation) etc.
There is a separate section that specially focuses on seed, fruits and their types.
At the end of this chapter, We will get an insight into a very important topic i.e description of a few plant families like Brassicaceae, Fabaceae, Solanaceae, and Liliaceae with examples and their economic importance.
