Introduction to Chapter 5-Democratic Rights

Rights of one kind or another are important for respectful existence in society. The chapter discusses the instances of violation of human rights and mechanisms to safeguard the rights. About 600 people were picked up by the US government on the pretext of the 9/11 US attacks and secretly kept in a prison in Guantanamo Bay. They were denied their deserved human rights. Citizens in Saudi Arabia live under an absolute monarchical system where people do lack even basic civic rights. People do not have freedom of religion nor do they have the freedom of expression and speech. Yugoslavia got disintegrated into six independent nations just because of the religious tensions that prevailed in the state. When it comes to rights, it can be defined as the claims that have legal backing and can be fought for in case of their denial. The Indian constitution guarantees six fundamental rights to its citizens namely, the Right to Equality, the Right to Freedom, the Right against Exploitation, the Right to Freedom of Religion, Cultural and Educational Rights and the Right to Constitutional Remedies. The Indian Constitution discourages any kind of discrimination on any grounds and promotes a socialist, secular and democratic state. The right to constitutional remedies safeguards the rights provided by the Constitution. If in case any of the fundamental rights get violated, one has the right to approach the Indian jurisdiction.
