Introduction to Chapter 3 The Delhi sultans
Delhi became an important city in the 11th century. Delhi was earlier ruled by the Rajput kings. The recognition of Delhi as a capital city came after the establishment of the Sultanate. This also came to be called the Delhi Sultanate which began with the establishment of the slave dynasty led by Qutubuddin Aibak. The rulers of Delhi are discussed in the chapter. How and from where they came and why they came to India and not to any other country are discussed in the chapter. Some of the prominent kingdoms of the Delhi sultanate and its rulers such as the tughlaq and khilji dynasties are discussed in brief. In the end, the sultans of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries were discussed in detail.
