The difference between an observed and a correct or acceptable value is measured in percentage error. When measuring data, the outcome frequently differs from the actual value. Various factors, including human error, can cause inaccuracy, but they can also be caused by estimations and limitations of the measurement devices. Regardless, calculating the percentage inaccuracy becomes critical in such situations. The absolute error is just the difference between the observed and actual value and is used to calculate percentage error. After dividing the fundamental error by the true value, the relative error is multiplied by 100 to get the percentage error.

What is meant by Percent Error?

Whenever we experiment, we obtain results that are either identical to or differ from the actual value. The difference between the estimated and actual value is called error. Measurement errors occur due to unavoidable flaws in the measuring instrument and the human eye's limitations. Errors happen in many shapes and sizes, and we must sometimes decide whether the inaccuracy in our measurement is significant enough to render the measurement meaningless. The lesser the error, the closer we are to the correct value. As a result, scientists established a method for calculating the magnitude of estimating inaccuracy.

Percent Error Definition

The difference between the real and estimated values relative to the actual value is stated in a percentage format as a percent error. In other words, you calculate the difference between the correct and incorrect answers, divide it by the correct answer, and express the result as a percentage. The percent mistakes show how significant our errors are when we measure something. A 5% mistake, for example, implies that we were quite near to the accepted number, whereas a 60% error shows that we were rather far from the actual value.

The percentage inaccuracy is usually expressed as a positive number. The actual value or theoretical value are other terms for absolute value. Finally, the error's total value is divided by the actual value and expressed as a percentage.
