Percent Composition Formula

About Percent Composition Formula

We will learn how to calculate the percent composition of a compound using the percent composition formula, which is the ratio of the quantity of elements present in terms of percentage. In the realm of chemistry, it is mostly used to determine the percent composition of various compounds. The amount of each element contained in a compound is expressed as a mass proportion in percent composition. The mass percent of each element can be calculated using the percentage composition formula.

The percent composition of an element is computed by dividing the element's molar mass by the compound's total molecular mass. The formula for percent composition is as follows:

% CE = gEgT×100%

  • gE= Mass of element in one mole of compound
  • gT = Molar mass of compound

Steps to Calculate the Percent Composition Formula

  • Calculate molar mass of all the individual compounds.
  • Get molecular mass of the compound.
  • Divide molar mass (of the specific element) by molecular mass of the compound.
  • Multiply result by 100 to convert it into a percentage (%).

Percent Composition=(Total Mass of Element Present)(Molecular Mass)×100
