About Multiplication Formula

Multiplication is process of determining the product of two or more numbers in mathematics. It is a basic arithmetic operation that is frequently utilised in everyday life. When we need to combine groups of equivalent size, we employ multiplication.

Multiplication is a mathematical operation that conveys the idea of adding the same number again. The factors are the numbers that are multiplied, and the result achieved after multiplying two or more numbers is known as the product of those numbers. Multiplication is a technique for making repeated additions of the same number easier.

Multiplication Symbol (×)

Different symbols are used in mathematics. One of the most often used math symbols is the multiplication sign. When we look at the multiplication expression (6 x 10 = 60), we can see that the symbol (x) joins the two integers and completes the equation. Multiplication is represented by the mid-line dot operator (.) and the asterisk sign (*) in addition to the cross symbol (x).

Multiplication Formula

Multiplicand x Multiplier = Product is the multiplication formula, in which:

  • Multiplicand: 1st number (factor).
  • Multiplier: 2nd number (factor).
  • Product: Net result after multiplying the multiplicand & multiplier.
  • Multiplication symbol: '×' ( connects entire expression)

6(multiplicand) × 6 (multiplier) = 36 (product)

How to Solve Multiplication Problems?

One-digit integers can be multiplied easily using multiplication tables, while bigger numbers are split into columns using their appropriate place values, such as ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on. Multiplication difficulties can be divided into two categories:

  • Without regrouping and then multiplication
  • With regrouping and then multiplication

Multiplication Without Regrouping

Multiplication of two numbers without regrouping involves smaller numbers where there is no need to take a carry-over to the next higher place value. It is the basic level that could help a learner understand the basics of multiplication before moving on to the higher level of problems including regrouping. Let us understand this with the help of the example given below.

Solved examples of Multiplication Formula

Example: Multiply 214 by 2.

Solution:

  • Step 1: ones place. (2 × 4 = 8)
  • Step 2: Multiply 2 with digit in tens place. (2 × 1 = 2)
  • Step 3: Now, multiply 2 with digit in hundreds place. (2 × 2 = 4)
  • Step 4: 214 × 2 = 428.

Multiplication With Regrouping

Multiplication of more than two numbers with regrouping uses two-digit products. We must carry-over to the next higher place value in this type of multiplication..
