About Factoring Trinomials Formula
Let's review what a trinomial is before learning the formulas for factoring trinomials. A polynomial having three terms is called a trinomial. Factoring is the process of composing an expression from two or more other expressions. A perfect square or a non-perfect square is a trinomial.
A perfect square or a non-perfect square is a trinomial. A perfect square trinomial can be factorized using two formulas. However, there is no specific formula for factoring a non-perfect square trinomial; instead, the process is:-
Trinomials formulas for factoring the perfect square trinomials:
- a2 + b2 + 2ab = (a + b)2
- a2 + b2 - 2ab = (a - b)2
Applying either of these formulas, trinomial should be one of the forms:-
- a2 + 2ab + b2 (or) a2 + b2- 2ab
Process of factoring non-perfect trinomial as ax2 + bx + c is:-
- Find ac & identify b.
- Find 2 numbers whose product is ac & whose sum is b.
- Split middle term as sum of two terms using the numbers from step - 2.
- Factorise by grouping.
