Introduction to Chapter 5 Kingdoms, Kings and the Early Republic
The chapter discusses the formation of Janpadas and Mahajanapadas which are known to be the earliest forms of kingdoms. Reference to the same can be found in the Buddhist texts like Anguttar Nikaya. This chapter will help us to know about some men who became rulers and established their kingdoms also known as janapadas. We will also study bigger kingdoms known as Mahajanapadas which were ruled by the rulers who were the most powerful. The changes in agriculture after the advent of the mahajanapadas and the change in the tax pattern after the coming of these kingdoms will also be studied at the end of the chapter.
