On November 12th, 1896, Dr. Salim Ali was born.
Salim Alii had his early schooling at St Xavers College, Bombay.He was a well-known naturalist and ornithologist. He is renowned as India’s “Birdman.” Salim All was the first Indian to organise a systematic bird survey in the country. His bird writings have greatly contributed to the advancement of bird knowledge. In 1976, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian honour.After becoming a member of the Bombay Natural History Society in 1947, he used his clout to get government funding for the organisation.
He was instrumental in the establishment of the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary (Keila Dee National Park).He also worked hard to prevent the development of a dam that threatened the Silent Valley National Park.
