Which regiment was first in Indian Army?

The Madras Regiment is recognized as the first regiment in the Indian Army. Formed in 1758, it holds the distinction of being one of the oldest regiments, originating as part of the British Indian Army. This regiment has a long history of bravery and valor, participating in numerous campaigns during both British and independent India. Its soldiers are primarily recruited from the southern states of India, contributing significantly to the Indian Army’s rich legacy

The Madras Regiment’s establishment predates other notable regiments such as the Punjab Regiment, formed in 1761, and the Maratha Light Infantry, established in 1768. Each of these regiments has its unique history and contributions, but the Madras Regiment’s early formation marks it as a foundational unit of the Indian military establishment .
