What is the Scale of a Graph?

The scale of a graph is the range of values presented along either the horizontal or vertical axis.

Consider a boy who wants to convince his father to increase his weekly allowance which is ₹ 100. For that, he collects data from his friends about their weekly allowances. If he scribbles all his data on paper, his father won’t be able to get a clear picture of the same as analysing would become difficult.

Data written on a piece of paper

But if he depicts the same data graphically the data will look like as follows:

Data represented like a graph

Data represented like a graph

There are more chances that the boy’s father will understand this data better as it’s visually

appealing and also easy to analyse than the plain texts scribbled on paper. In the above graph, the difference between the numbers on the Y-axis is 50. So here, the scale of the graph chosen by the boy is 1 unit = ₹ 50.
