What is Probability?

What is Probability?

Probability is a measure of the likelihood of an event to occur. For example,

Consider three students who were asked about their probability of passing in their Mathematics paper.

Student 1 said his probability of passing was low. Student 2 said his probability of passing was very high.

Student 3 said that his probability of passing is somewhere in between. He may pass or he may fail.

So the probability just tells how likely it is for an event to occur. Here, the event is passing the exam.

In the first case, the likelihood of the student passing is not very likely. In the second case, the likelihood of passing is very likely. And in the third case, the likelihood of passing is somewhere in between.

But none of them is sure, they are only telling what they feel and what is the most likely outcome. This is probability.
