What is Mean, Median, and Mode?

What is Mean?

The mean is the average of the numbers.

For example,

Consider the following numbers: 12, 16, 12, 6, 18, 2, and 4

𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 = 𝑆𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑠/𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑠

= 12+16+12+6+18+2+4/7 = 70/7 = 10

∴ The mean of 12, 16, 12, 6, 18, 2 and 4 is 10.

What is Median?

The median is the middle value of the list when it’s arranged in ascending order.

For example,

Consider the following numbers:

12, 16, 12, 6, 18, 2, and 4.

The ascending order of these numbers is as follows: 2, 4, 6, 12, 12, 16, 18

12 is the middle value.

∴ The median of this set of values is 12.

What is Mode?

The mode is the value that appears most often in a set of data. For example,

Consider the following numbers:

12, 16, 12, 6, 18, 2, and 4

Here, 12 occurs twice which is the most number of occurrences.

∴ The mode of this set of values is 12.
