Hydride : A chemical compound in which hydrogen is combined with another element is known as hydride.
There are three types of hydrides based on the type of chemical bond involved.
Saline (ionic), metallic, and covalent.
1. Covalent hydride: Molecular hydrides formed with the p−block elements.
They are covalent molecules which are held together by weak Vander Waals forces of attraction.
They have low melting and boiling point.
They are volatile in nature.
E.g. CH4 ,​ NH3 and HF.
​ 2. Ionic or Saline hydride: These are Molecular hydrides formed with the s−block elements or alkali and alkaline earth metals.
These hydride are crystalline and non volatile in nature.
They have high melting and boiling points.
E.g. NaH, BeH2 ​, MgH2 ​ etc.
3. Metallic hydrides: These are Molecular hydrides formed with d−block and f−block elements. In these hydrides, hydrogen occupies interstices in the metal lattice due to small size dihydrogen, producing distribution without any charge in its type.
So these are known as interstitial hydrides.
These are deficient in hydrogen.
E.g. ScH2 ​ ,LaH2 ​ ,CrH3 etc.
