What is chipko movement?

The Chipko movement, also known as the Chipko Andolan, was a forest conservation movement in India that emerged in the 1970s. The term “Chipko” means “to hug” or “to cling to” in Hindi, and the movement derived its name from the practice of villagers, especially women, hugging trees to protect them from being felled.
