The Average is also called the Arithmetic mean or simply, the mean.

For example,

Question. Find the mean of 1, 3, 8, 12, and 16.

Solution:

Step 1:Β Sum of terms = 1 + 3 + 8 + 12 + 16 = 40

Step 2:Β Number of terms = 5

Step 3:Β π‘€π‘’π‘Žπ‘› = π‘†π‘’π‘š π‘œπ‘“ π‘£π‘Žπ‘™π‘’π‘’π‘ /π‘π‘’π‘šπ‘π‘’π‘Ÿ π‘œπ‘“ π‘£π‘Žπ‘™π‘’π‘’π‘ 

∴ π‘€π‘’π‘Žπ‘› = 40/5

∴ π‘€π‘’π‘Žπ‘› = 8

Thus, the mean of 1, 3, 8, 12, and 16 is 8.
