Prothallus: The prothallus is the early stage in the life of ferns and some other plants like pteridophytes.
What is a prothallus like?
- The prothallus is like a small plant that grows from tiny spores.
- It looks like a little heart and doesn’t last very long.
- Different types of prothalli can look different.
- Some can be clear, while others are green and use sunlight to make oxygen.
- Each one has parts for making both male and female cells.
- The male part is called antheridia, and the female part is called archegonia.
- When the male part’s cells meet the female part’s cell, they make a new cell called a zygote.
- This zygote grows into a new plant called a sporophyte.
