What are the functions of leaves?

There are two main functions of the leaves: Photosynthesis and Transpiration.

(i)  What is Photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis is a process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy to prepare their own food. It mainly occurs in leaves. Hence, leaves are also known as the kitchen of the plant.

The reaction only takes place when a green coloured pigment called chlorophyll is present. The three main ingredients required for the production of food are carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight.

(ii)  What is Transpiration?

Transpiration is a process by which plants release excess water in the form of water vapours. These vapours are released through tiny pores called stomata.
