A graph consists of the following components:
- X-axis and Y-axis: The X-axis and Y-axis are two lines that create the coordinate
- Every unit, horizontally as well as vertically, is one centimetre
- Every centimetre is divided into 10 millimetres by thin
Components of a Graph
How to Draw a graph?
Consider the following values of kids and their weekly allowance.
Name of the kid | Monthly
allowance (₹) |
Zen | 100 |
Asha | 150 |
Ben | 200 |
Carly | 300 |
Dev | 150 |
Elon | 250 |
To draw a graph, first, fix a scale. The range of the data which is the difference between the greatest and the smallest value as well as the number of gridlines is an important factor in fixing the scale.
- Range of the data
The range of the data is the difference between the largest value and the smallest value.
The largest value in this set is 300 and the smallest value is 100.
∴ Range of the data = 300 – 100 = 200
- The number of gridlines
A graph paper generally has around 10 gridlines. In most cases, the start of the Y-axis is considered zero.
Considering this, a suitable range is 1 centimetre = ₹ 50.
Once the scale is chosen, drawing of the graph can be started using the following steps:
- Step 1: Draw X and Y axes.
- Step 2: Write the names of kids on the X-axis and weekly allowance on the Y-axis.
- Step 3: Mark 50, 100, 150, and so on up to 300 on the Y-axis, as the scale is 1 centimetre = ₹50.
- Step 4: Draw a bar graph to the height that corresponds to the weekly allowance. For instance, to represent Asha’s weekly allowance, draw a bar up to 150.
