What is Noise?

Unpleasant and unwanted sounds are called Noise.

The sound of vehicles honking on the road, bursting of firecrackers, sound from the loudspeakers during processions are some examples of noise.

What is Noise Pollution?

Noise pollution or sound pollution is unwanted or excessive sound that can have deleterious effects on human health, wildlife, and environmental quality.

What are the harmful effects of noise pollution on human health?

  • Lack of Sleep: Loud sound coming from the surroundings especially during night time, affects sleep which has detrimental effects on our
  • High blood pressure: Noise can increase the rate of our heartbeat which in turn increases the blood pressure in our
  • Hearing impairment: Continuous exposure to loud sounds may also lead to permanent loss of hearing.

Some other effects of noise on the human body are anxiety, stress, and mental fatigue.

How can noise pollution be controlled?

There are several measures by which noise pollution can be controlled. These include:

  • Reducing the usage of horns of vehicles on roads in or around residential areas
  • Planting trees across roads and buildings because they help in absorbing noise
  • Setting up industries away from residential areas
  • Conducting noisy operations like parties, festivals far away from the residential areas
