Sound – Introduction

Introduction

We are already familiar with the concept of sound. Sound plays a very important role in our life and most importantly, it helps us to communicate with each other.

What produces Sound?

Sound is produced by vibration. Vibration is a to and fro or back and forth motion of an object.

For instance, take a tuning fork, and strike one of its prongs gently on a rubber pad. A sound is produced by the vibrating prongs. Though it is difficult to observe the prongs vibrating you can still feel these vibrations by touching the prongs with your hand.

There is another way to observe the vibrations of the prongs. Take a glass full of water and dip the vibrating prongs inside the glass. You will notice that a disturbance is generated inside the glass and water starts to spill out of it. It is because of the vibrations produced by the prongs.

We humans also make sounds in the form of talking, laughing, whispering, and so on. The vocal cords present inside our larynx vibrate to produce sound.
