Pancreas is a composite gland meaning it acts as both endocrine and exocrine gland.
The endocrine part of the pancreas consists of Islets of Langerhans that represent 1-2% of pancreatic tissue.
There are mainly two types of cells in Islets of Langerhans- and cells.
The – cells secrete glucagon hormone and – cells secrete insulin hormone.
Glucagon and insulin are peptide hormones that together maintain normal blood glucose levels.
Glucagon acts on liver cells and stimulates glycogenolysis(breakdown of glycogen) and it also forms new glucose(gluconeogenesis).
It also reduces the uptake of glucose by cells i.e. increases the glucose levels in the blood and so it is called hyperglycemic hormone.
Whereas insulin works just opposite to glucagon.
It acts on liver cells and cells of adipose tissue and increases the uptake of glucose.
It acts to convert glucose to glycogen(glycogenesis)
Hence it is called hypoglycemic hormone.
