Motion and unit of measurement – Different units of length

In the previous segment, we learned about units of measurement of length.

In this segment, we will learn more about the unit of measurement of length, SI unit of length, and the conversion of one unit of length to another.

What are the different units of length?

We use different units of length for different purposes.

●     For measuring larger distances or lengths, we use:

  • Metre
  • Kilometres
  • Miles
  • Yards

For example, the height of a flagpole, the distance between India and Germany,  and so on.

●     For measuring smaller lengths, we use:

  • Centimetres
  • Inches
  • Feet

For example, the length of a pencil, the height of a person, the diameter of a ball, and so on.

●     For lengths smaller than this, we use

  • Millimetres

For example, the length of a pencil tip, the width of a book, and so on. All these units of length are related to each other and hence, can be converted from one unit to another.

How to convert between Units of Length?

  • 1 mile = 1.6 kilometer
  • 1 kilometer = 1000 meter
  • 1 meter = 100 centimeter
  • 1 centimeter = 10 millimeter
  • 1 inch = 2.54 centimeter
  • 1 foot = 12 inches = 30.48 centimeter
  • 1 yard = 3 feet = 91.44 centimeter
  • 1 mile = 1760 yards = 1,60,934.4 centimeter

Having so many units of length can be confusing. Hence one of these units has been universally accepted as a standard unit of length or the SI unit of length.

What is the SI unit of length?

SI Unit stands for the International System of units. This system of units helps prevent confusion when there are many units of measurement.

The standard unit of length or the SI unit of length is metres.

And similarly, we have SI units for measurement of other quantities as well.
