Magnitude and Direction of Force

What is the Magnitude of a Force?

The Magnitude of a force is simply the measure of force that is applied or the strength of that force. This strength can be measured quantitatively.

What is the Direction of Force?

The Direction of a force in the direction in which that force is being applied or acts.

What is the Unit of Force?

The Unit of force is expressed in Newton, denoted by capital letter N.

We specify the magnitude, direction, and unit of force together. This gives us the complete information about that force.

For example, the boy in the image is moving the table from point A to B or from left to right

(Direction) with a force of magnitude 5 Newtons (Magnitude = 5, Unit = Newtons).

Summary

Magnitude of Force Measure of the strength of Force
Direction of Force Direction in which the force is applied or acts
Unit of Force Newtons or N

An object that has both a magnitude and a direction is identified as a vector. Force is measured as a vector and represented by an arrow and a numerical value.
