Human Heart – Part 2

What are the Different blood vessels present in the heart?

The human heart has five major blood vessels that help in the process of circulation. They are as follows:

(i) Superior vena cava

The superior vena cava brings the deoxygenated blood from the upper part of the body to the right atrium.

(ii) Inferior vena cava

The inferior vena cava brings the deoxygenated blood from the lower part of the body to the right atrium

(iii) Pulmonary arteries

Pulmonary arteries carry the deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs. They are the only arteries in the body that carries deoxygenated blood.

(iv) Pulmonary veins

Pulmonary veins carry the oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium. They are the only veins in the body that carry oxygenated blood.

(v) Aorta

The Aorta carries the oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to the entire body.

What are the Different valves present in the heart?

The heart has the following valves to prevent the backflow of the blood:

(i) Tricuspid valve

The tricuspid valve is present at the junction of the right atrium and right ventricle. It prevents the backflow of the blood from the ventricle to the atrium.

(ii) Bicuspid valve

The bicuspid valve is present at the junction of the left atrium and left ventricle. It prevents the backflow of the blood from the ventricle to the atrium.

What is the Process of circulation of blood?

  • The deoxygenated blood from the upper and lower parts of the body is brought to the

Right atrium by the superior and inferior vena cava respectively.

  • The tricuspid valve opens and the blood flows from the right atrium to the right
  • From the Right ventricle, the blood is sent to the lungs for oxygenation through pulmonary
  • The blood gets oxygenated by the Alveoli present in the lungs. The oxygenated blood is carried by the pulmonary veins to the left
  • The bicuspid valve opens and oxygenated blood is poured into the left
  • The Aorta carries the oxygenated blood from the left ventricle and supplies it to the
  • The circulation of blood in human beings is also called Double circulation as the blood is circulated twice in the
