India is the birthplace of Hinduism, where nearly 970 million Hindus live. In India, out of a total population of 1.21 billion, about 79.8% are Hindus. The Hindu population has grown by 16.8% over the last decade (from 2001 to 2011), down from the previous growth rate of 19.92%. Hinduism is the primary religion in most Indian states, except Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Mizoram, where Christianity is more common, as well as Punjab, which is predominantly Sikh, and Jammu & Kashmir and Lakshadweep, where Islam is the dominant religion.
