Oxidation happens when a substance gets oxygen added to it or loses hydrogen. In simple terms, it’s when something loses electrons. For instance, when carbon combines with oxygen, it forms carbon dioxide: C ( s ) + O 2 ( g ) → CO 2 ( g ).
