Components of Air

What are the components of air?

Nitrogen is the most abundant component found in the air. This is followed by oxygen. A small percentage of air consists of noble gases like argon, neon, helium, and other components like carbon dioxide, water vapour, dust, smoke particles etc.

Composition of air

The amount of nitrogen present in the air is around 78%. Oxygen accounts for around 21% of the total air. The remaining 1% is occupied by the noble gases and other components.

Among these, argon occupies most of the amount at 0.9% and is followed by carbon dioxide at 0.04 %.

What is a Greenhouse gas?

Greenhouse gases are the gases that make a layer around the earth and trap the right amount of sun rays that hit the earth.

Carbon dioxide is one of the most important greenhouse gases. It is also a by-product released due to several reactions that occur on the surface of the earth.

Other components like the noble gases neon, helium, and compounds like methane, water vapour, pollutants like smoke and dust particles make up the rest of the greenhouse gases.
