Alleles – Part 1

What are Alleles?

  • Chromosomes are homologous if they have the same set of
  • In a chromosome pair, one pair of genes, say B and b, define the eye
  • So, B and b form the same set of genes, but they are not the same
  • Since both chromosomes have genes for the same character on the same locus, they can be called Homologous chromosomes.

Alleles

Alleles

  • B and b are not the same genes because they are two different
  • Two or more alternative forms of genes which are located at the same place on the chromosome are called Alleles.
  • They are forms of genes that give different

For example, alleles for black eye colour, for brown eye colour, for blue eye colour, etc.

Alleles and Genes

Alleles and Genes

  • In the trait, eye colour, the genes for eye colour are not the same on each
  • B represents the gene for black eye colour, while b represents the trait of brown eye colour.
  • So, the character is eye colour, and the two traits are black and brown coloured
  • These two traits are given by two genes which is the gene for black eye colour and gene for brown eye colour. These individual genes are
  • They are the variations of genes which help to gain a particular
