Question

Chlor-alkali process, as the name suggests, is a method that leads to synthesis of Cl2 and NaOH,an alkali. It is brought about by electrolysis of brine i.e. aq. NaCl sol..

The  chemical equation for chlor-alkali process can be written as follows:

NaCl + H2O→NaOH + Cl2 + H2

Upon balancing it by simply ensuring equal number of atoms of each element on either sides, equation obtained is :2NaCl + 2H2O →2NaOH + Cl2 + H2

Hence, post balancing, balanced chemical  equation of chlor-alkali process or brine electrolysis is as given below:

2NaCl + 2H2O →2NaOH + Cl2 + H2
