Question

Explanation

Genetic code comprises tri-nucleotide units called codons; each of the specific codon codes for a specific amino acid or for a stop signal.

The four salient features of a genetic code are:

  1. Universal: The genetic code is universal, which means all living organisms use the same genetic code. For example, UUU (codon) would code for phenylalanine in all the organisms. The only exception is the mitochondrial codons or some protozoans
  2. The codon is triplet: out of 64 codons, 61 code for amino acid and the rest three function as stop codons.
  3. Degenerate: There are some amino acids which are coded by more than one codon.
  4. Unambiguous and specific: A single codon codes for only one amino acid.

Final Answer

The salient features of a genetic code are: it is universal, each codon is triplet, it is degenerate and unambiguous and specific.
