Jawaharlal Nehru was the first and the longest-serving prime minister of India. He served as prime minister of the Dominion of India from 15 August 1947 until 26 January 1950, and after that of the Republic of India until his death in May 1964. Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru was born in Allahabad on November 14, 1889. Jawaharlal Nehru had his first meeting with Mahatma Gandhi in 1916 and felt immensely inspired by him. In 1929, Jawaharlal Nehru was elected President of the Lahore Session of the Indian National Congress, where complete independence or poorna swaraj for the country was adopted as the goal. He was the first prime minister who died in office. Jawaharlal Nehru was the son of prominent lawyer Motilal Nehru.

In 1919 he became the secretary of the Home rule league, Allahabad. He founded the 'Independence for India League' along with Subhash Chandra Bose. In 1942 Jawaharlal Nehru moved the historic 'Quit India' resolution at the All India Congress Committee session in Bombay. Jawaharlal Nehru appointed the state's reorganisation commission under the chairmanship of justice Faza Ali in 1953 to organise states on a linguistic basis.
