Question
Who is the First President of India?
Numerous years of turmoil and struggle led India to its freedom in 1947. An Independent India , however, was yet to be a Republic. This landmark was finally achieved in the year 1950 when the constitution of India was enforced. It also gave the country its first president in the form of Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was not only the first president of India but also a lawyer, journalist and eminent Indian politician. He was born on 3rd December,1884 in Siwan Bihar. He was also a prominent figure in the Indian freedom struggle and a close companion of Mahatma Gandhi. He served as the president of the Indian National Congress thrice(1934,1939,1947).He was an active figure in the non-cooperation movement. Dr. Rajendra Prasad graduated from the Calcutta Law College and started practising law at the Calcutta High Court. He was the founder of the Bihar Law Weekly. He had a vision to establish Hindi as the national language. He was quite moved and impressed by the ideas and views of Gandhiji on caste and untouchability. His humanitarian contribution in the 1914 Bihar and Bengal floods and 1934 Bihar earthquake crisis will always be remembered and appreciated.
He is also credited with the founding of a National College near Patna in 1921. This was a great move by Dr. Rajendra Prasad with respect to the Non-Cooperation movement as he gave up his practice in support of the movement.
