Mangal Pandey belonged to the 34th Bengal Native Infantry regiment of the English East India company.

He was made a soldier in the 6th company of the 34th Bengal Native Infantry, which included a large number of Brahmans.He is accredited with igniting the first spark of nationalism when he refused to follow the order of his officers in connection with the use of Enfield rifle. He was someone who inspired the entire regiment to fight against the atrocities of the British.His revolting approach ignited the spark which turned into the furious revolt of 1857. It can be said that the stage that he set for the beginning of a mass struggle later combined with several nationalist movements helped India win her freedom from the British.
