Red blood cells (RBC) contain the protein molecule haemoglobin, which transports oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and returns carbon dioxide from the tissues to the lungs. Haemoglobin is made up of four interconnected protein molecules (globulin chains). Because of the presence of haemoglobin, RBC is red in colour. As a result, red blood cells contain haemoglobin.
