The capital of Meghalaya is Shillong, located at an altitude of 1496 metres above sea level. In 1874, Shillong was made the capital of Assam, and it remained so till January 1972, till the formation of Meghalaya. The capital city derives its name from the manifestation of the creator called Shyllong.
The climate of Shillong varies with altitude. Shillong is also called "India's Rock Capital" due to its inhabitants' great passion for music.
