Capital of Karnataka
Bangalore became the capital of the new state of Mysore and remained the capital during the reorganization of states in 1956; Mysore was renamed Karnataka in 1973. Bangalore, officially known as Bengaluru, is the capital of the Indian State of Karnataka. In 2006 the city officially changed its name to Bengaluru, although the old name was still widely used. Bangalore is located in the heart of the Mysore Plateau. Its population is over ten million, making it a megacity and the third most populous city and fifth-most populous urban agglomeration in India. It is located in Southern India on the Deccan Plateau.
Bangalore is sometimes referred to as the "Silicon Valley of India" (or "IT capital of India") because of its role as the nation's leading information technology (IT) exporter. Indian technological organizations ISRO, Infosys, Wipro and HAL, are headquartered in the city. A demographically diverse city, Bangalore is the second-fastest-growing major metropolis in India. Bangalore is also the house of the Kannada film industry. The British East India Company captured the city after victory in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War (1799). Bangalore has a tropical savanna climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The official language of Bangalore is Kannada which is spoken by 44.5% of the population. The greenery, broad streets, and many public parks, such as Lal Bagh and Cubbon Park of Bangalore, make it the "Garden City of India".
