Polymerisation refers to the process in which a large number of molecules combine to form a bigger molecule. 

This bigger molecule is called a polymer and the combining units are called monomers.

These monomers can either be the same molecules or different.

The polymers formed can be linear, branched or complex like.

The polymerisation reaction can be of various types, the most notable of which are step-growth polymerization, chain-growth polymerization and condensation polymerization.

One example of a polymerization reaction is the formation of polyethylene from ethylene.
