Pumpkin is the national vegetable of India. It is also known as ‘Kaddu’ in Hindi and grows all over India. It does not require special soil conditions and can be used as a climber or creeper. It is known as the poor man’s vegetable since it grows quickly and produces great vegetables. Pumpkins vary in colour from deep yellow to orange.
Only Antarctica cannot grow pumpkins out of all the seven continents of the world. While commonly viewed as a vegetable, scientifically, a pumpkin is a fruit as it contains seeds. It is native to North America and is famous around Halloween and Thanksgiving. The varieties of Pumpkin are Arka Suryamukhi, Arka Chandan, Punjab Samrat, PPH-1, PPH-2, etc. Indian pumpkins are widely exported from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. In South Asia and India, Pumpkin is a traditional medicine to treat respiratory ailments such as bronchitis, asthma, and tuberculosis.
