In the roots of leguminous plants, the bacteria Rhizobium lives as a symbiont where it carries out nitrogen fixation and provides the plants with nitrogen compounds and in turn gets food and shelter. This process is called as symbiosis. In such condition, bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia and other nitrogenous comounds. This is called symbiotic nitrogen fixation.
