Question
Civil disobedience movement(1930-1934)
Mahatma Gandhi started Salt Satyagraha when he marched from Sabarmati to Dandi. (March 12 1930 - April 6 1930). Breaking the salt of law at Dandi formally inaugurated the Civil Disobedience Movement. Along with 78 followers, Gandhi started his famous march from Sabarmati Ashram on March 12, 1930, to the small village of Dandi (Navsari District) to break the Salt Law. Gandhi covered a distance of 240 miles in 24 days (March, March 12 – April 5). On reaching the seashore on April 6, he broke the Salt Law by picking up salt from the seashore. By picking a handful of salt, Gandhi inaugurated the Civil Disobedience Movement. This movement was to remain unsurpassed in the history of the Indian National Movement for the countrywide mass participation it unleashed. In the prevailing atmosphere of restlessness, the annual session of the Congress was held in Lahore in December 1929. During this session, presided over by Jawaharlal Nehru, Congress passed the Poorna Swaraj resolution.
Moreover, as the government failed to accept the Nehru Report, Congress gave a call to launch the Civil Disobedience Movement. Congress had also observed January 26, 1930, as the Day of Independence. Since then, January 26 has been observed as a day of independence every year. The same date became Republic Day when the Indian Constitution was enforced in 1950.
