Adjectives

Adjectives are types of words that describe any word. They are also used to modify words. Suppose for example -when a person says that this house is small, one cannot predict how small the house is. But if someone says this house is too small, then we can clearly emphasize the fact that the house is not just small it is too small.

With the use of adjectives one can make his/her writing more clear. If we write that the sky is colourful, we can assume that the sky is colourful but if we write that the sky is of blue colour then we can easily say that sky is colorful and the colour of the sky is blue.

Similarly speaking can also be made more specific with the use of adjectives.

There are many types of adjectives

Types of Adjectives

Remember that adjectives can modify as well as describe other words, and you’ll find it much easier to identify different types of adjectives when you see them.

Only three articles exist in English grammar and all of the three articles are adjectives. The three articles are a ,an and the. out of the three articles it is because a and an are used to discuss non-specific things and people, they are called indefinite articles. For example: The sentence does not give clear indication about where to go so a person can go anywhere. Hence it is called indefinite articles. However the word is called the definite article. It is the only definite article and is used to clearly indicate anything. For example, please give me the bat. The person here is clearly asking for the bat, so it is a definite adjective.

  • Possessive Adjectives

As the name indicates, possessive adjectives are used to indicate a particular possession. Examples of possessive adjectives are my, mine ,his ,hers ,ours. Possessive adjectives also function as possessive pronouns.

  • Demonstrative Adjectives

Demonstrative adjectives, like the definite adjective, are used to indicate or demonstrate specific person, place or things. Some examples of demonstrative adjectives are - These, those, this and that.

For example- These pens belong to me.

  • Coordinate Adjectives

Coordinate adjectives are separated with commas or the word and, and appear together to modify the same word.

For example - The adjectives in the phrase bright, sunny day are coordinate adjectives.

We need to be careful sometimes because some adjectives that appear in a series are not coordinate.for example- In the phrase green delivery truck, the words green and delivery are not separated by a comma because green modifies the phrase delivery truck.

  • Numbers Adjectives

We can tell that a number is an adjective when it answers the question “How many?” For example- the team has 11 players.

  • Interrogative Adjectives

Interrogative adjectives are used to modify nouns. There are three interrogative adjectives namely which, what, and whose. All three of these words are used to ask questions and to interrogate. For examples- Which book do you love the most?

  • Indefinite Adjectives

Indefinite adjectives are used to discuss non-specific things. Some of the most common indefinite adjectives are any, many, no, several, and few.For example- Do you have any box of chocolates with you.
