What do you understand by activation of adsorbent? How is it achieved?

Increasing the adsorbing power of adsorbent is known as activation of adsorbent. it can be achieved by 

1) Increase in surface area of adsorbent.   

2)By dividing the adsorbent into small grains.  

3)By making its surface rough.
