Trigonometric ratios

Before this , let's understand what trigonometry is.

Trigonometry is a branch of mathematics in which we study the relationship between the sides and angles of a right angled triangle. Trigonometry is made of three words-

  • Tri- three
  • Gon- angles
  • Metry- measurements

In simple terms, trigonometry means measurements of all the three angles of a right angled triangle.

Trigonometric ratios

We have six trigonometric ratios-

Sine, cosine, tangent, cosecant, secant and cotangent.

Consider a right-angled triangle, right-angled at B.

With respect to ∠C, the ratios of trigonometry are given as:

  1. sine: Sine of an angle is defined as the ratio of the side opposite(perpendicular side) to that angle to the hypotenuse.
  2. cosine: Cosine of an angle is defined as the ratio of the side adjacent to that angle to the hypotenuse.
  3. tangent: Tangent of an angle is defined as the ratio of the side opposite to that angle to the side adjacent to that angle.
  4. cosecant: Cosecant is a multiplicative inverse of sine.
  5. secant: Secant is a multiplicative inverse of cosine.
  6. cotangent: Cotangent is the multiplicative inverse of the tangent.
  • Sine= perpendicular/ hypotenuse
  • Cosine = base/ hypotenuse
  • Tangent= perpendicular/ base
  • Cosecant = hypotenuse/ perpendicular
  • Secant = hypotenuse/ base
  • Cotangent= base/ perpendicular
